Jewelry etching is an intensive method of jewelry making that applies photo etching or chemical etching. It is used to create stunning and intricately designed jewelry pieces. This process should not be confused with jewelry engraving, though. Jewelry etching is different as it is a chemical process whereas jewelry engraving is a physical one.

How Does Jewelry Etching Work?

Through jewelry etching, you can create very detailed and very intricate designs with higher precision compared to the traditional methods of jewelry making. The process of jewelry etching involves these steps:

  • Cutting and cleaning the metal for your pieces. Cleaning the metal sheet ensures that it is free of impurities before laminating, printing, and developing it. This task involves passing the metal slowly through acid and alkaline solutions.
  • Laminating the metal with a thin film of blue ultraviolet photo-sensitive resist that is then printed with the design profile. The design is applied to the metal through a two-sided photo tool. This tool ensures that all aspects of the design are matched up accurately on the two sides of the metal.
  • After the desired pattern or design is printed, the metal is developed by passing it through a series of chemical washes. This effectively washes off the unexposed photo-resist from the printing and then leaves a base metal profile track line for the Ferric Chloride to etch through the metal. Ferric Chloride is the etching chemistry used to produce intricate metal components. It attacks the portions of the metal that are not protected by the UV resist.
  • Once the jewelry design has been etched out, the blue UV photo-sensitive resist is removed, leaving the raw metal portions loose or tabbed into the bigger fretwork sheet.

  • With photo etching, it does not matter how simple or complex the design is. So even if your design calls for many holes or meshes, it can still be done and executed without additional costs.
  • Depending on the type and the thickness of the material or metal used, photo etching offers a tolerance from +-0.025 millimeter.
